September - All Creatures of Our God and King

Lyrics

All creatures of our God and King,

Lift up your voice and with us sing,

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou burning sun with golden beam,

Thou silver moon with softer gleam,

O praise Him, o praise Him,

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong,

Ye clouds that sail in heav’n along,

O praise Him! Alleluia!

Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,

Ye lights of ev’ning find a voice!

O praise Him, o praise Him!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

And all ye men of tender heart,

Forgiving others, take your part,

O sing ye! Alleluia!

Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,

Praise God and on Him cast your care!

O praise Him! O praise Him!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless

And worship Him in humbleness,

O praise Him, alleluia!

Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,

And praise the Spirit, Three in One:

O praise Him! O praise Him!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Words by St Francis of Assisi, translated by William H. Draper, Music: ‘Lasst uns erfreuen’

September Bible Memory Verse

Psalm 145:21, NIV

“My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.”

Story Behind the Song

This is an English hymn inspired by the words of St Francis Of Assisi. St Francis wrote these words nearly 800 years ago in a poem called ‘Canticle of the Sun’. His ideas for the poem came from Psalm 148.

In the beginning of the 1900s William Draper, an English minister, translated it from Latin into English and shaped it for singing. He wrote this setting we sing today for a children’s festival at his church called Whitsun. Whitsun is another name for the holy day in the church’s year called Pentecost. It is celebrated seven days after Easter and remembers the coming of the Holy Spirit to the early church.

The most common melody used with these words is a German tune called "Lasst uns erfreuen herzlich sehr" (Let us rejoice most heartily). It was written in 1623.

Something to Think About

The sounds of song fill God’s creation.

Most songbirds have a few songs in their repertoire. But then there are birds like the Brown Thrashers and they have up to 2000 songs that they sing! Weather moves upon the oceans day after day causing thousands of waves to crash like great cymbals on the shore. Beyond our natural human hearing, there are sound waves in space. The biggest stars make deeper sounds, like the bass. Smaller stars make higher-pitched sounds, like the flutes. (To read more: https://getty.pub/44Ohyng )

Then from a little child all the way up to the oldest person God has given us voices to join with all creation to praise our Creator. It is part of our design, it fits us, and it makes sense for us to sing praises to Him and celebrate his great power. We join the great song of praise just as Psalm 148 calls us to.

‘Kings of the earth and all peoples,

princes and all rulers of the earth!

Young men and maidens together,

old men and children!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,

for his name alone is exalted;

his majesty is above earth and heaven.’ (ESV)

Breathing and living and working and resting as a human being brings great glory to the Lord for we are His creation. Singing to Him gives voice to the praise that is our happy duty and serious joy to bring! Let us use this ancient hymn to call us to worship Him our Creator and Savior.

Prayer

Father in Heaven,

We thank You for the gift of being made human and being part of Your creation. Thank You for giving all Your creation the gift of song that we may praise You.

May our songs be filled with thanksgiving to you our Creator and our Redeemer. And may the name of the Lord Jesus, the one through whom all things were made, be always on our lips and in our hearts.

It is Christ who is Lord of all and He who will restore all that is broken and He who will receive all glory and praise in heaven and on earth,

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
