May - His Mercy Is More

Lyrics

What love could remember no wrongs we have done;

Omniscient, all-knowing, He counts not their sum.

Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore;

Our sins, they are many, His mercy is more.

Praise the Lord!

His mercy is more.

Stronger than darkness; new every morn;

Our sins, they are many, His mercy is more.

What patience would wait as we constantly roam;

What Father, so tender, is calling us home.

He welcomes, the weakest, the vilest, the poor;

Our sins, they are many, His mercy is more.

What riches of kindness He lavished on us;

His blood was the payment, His life was the cost.

We stood ‘neath a debt we could never afford;

Our sins, they are many, His mercy is more.

Words by Matt Boswell and Matt Papa

May Bible Memory Verse

Lamentations 3:22-23, ESV

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Story Behind the Song

This hymn was written by Matt Boswell and Matt Papa in 2016. They had been reading through the letters of Pastor/Hymn writer John Newton. Newton was born in 1725 in England. Once a slave-trader he became a Christian and his life was transformed. He became a pastor and was always quick to encourage people about God’s grace as he had known it so well himself. He wrote one of the most famous hymns about it - Amazing Grace!

A church member wrote to him once because they were troubled that the Lord might not have enough grace left for them. This was how Mr. Newton replied:

Together the two Matts shaped the lyric around this line ‘our sins are many, but His mercies are more’. The melody has an uplifting and driving feel to match that sense of joy and victory we have because of all Christ has done for us.

We have some motions that we use for this song which you can watch below. As a family it really is one of our favorite hymns to sing!

Something to Think About

The oceans hold many secrets and treasures telling stories of centuries of sea-travel! Off the North Coast of Northern Ireland, where we are from, there have been many discoveries of old shipwrecks and even lost treasure. Last year my Dad sent me this photo of an old ship at the bottom of the sea near our home. The water was so clear that day and we don’t usually see so well what is hiding under the surface of the North Atlantic Sea!

In Micah 7:9 it says of the Lord ‘You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.’ God is eager to forgive us all of our sin, all of it completely. Jesus paid the great debt we owed by dying on the cross. It’s as if he took our sin and threw it all overboard deep into the sea. But unlike this photo showing an old shipwreck our sin cannot and never can be found again if we ask the Lord to forgive us and trust Him as our Savior.

In Isaiah 43:25 the Lord says,

“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.”

His grace, the undeserved gift of His forgiveness, will always be more than we could ever need. There is no shore - it goes on and on. This is so so important to remember and to keep remembering all our lives! I hope this song sticks in your heart so you will always be comforted by His ocean deep love and grace to you and always be quick to praise Him for it!

Question: What does it mean to trust the Lord as your Savior?

Prayer

Father in Heaven,

We thank You for Your wide and deep ever-flowing grace. We sing praise to You for something that is more wonderful than we could ever imagine.

I confess that I think and do many wrong things. I ask for your forgiveness remembering Jesus’ great sacrifice on the cross.

Your grace is a treasure of infinite worth. May it cause my mouth to praise You more and my heart to love Your ways more.

May others see Your grace in me and so turn and find this treasure too,

For Christ’s glory,

Amen
