March - I Am Not My Own

Lyrics

The One who made the heavens made my heart and soul

Before I drew a breath, I was loved and known

I am His creation, the Maker's masterpiece

And all that He designs will be done in me

My body is a temple of the Living God

I'll worship in this house that His blood has bought

As I bear His image, oh may I not profane

The holiness I hold in this earthly frame

I belong to the Lord, oh I am not my own

I belong to the Lord, I am not my own

I will honor Him for this I know

I belong to the Lord, I am not my own

And if He has redeemed me, I am not my own

The measure of my worth is His love alone

He declares my standing, and He declares my state

So I will know myself by the name He gave

I belong to the Lord, oh I am not my own

I belong to the Lord, I am not my own

I will honor Him for this I know

I belong to the Lord, I am not my own

I am not my own and now my heart is free

O Maker come and make what You will of me

There is nothing broken that You cannot repair

So Lord, I leave my life in Your loving care

I belong to the Lord, oh I am not my own

I belong to the Lord, I am not my own

I will honor Him for this I know

I belong to the Lord, I am not my own

I will honor Him for this I know

I belong to the Lord, I am not my own

I Am Not My Own draws from this question and answer in the Heidelberg Catechism (1563):

Q & A 1
Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?
A. That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.

Something to Think About

I remember the day I got my own bedroom for the first time. I was about 8 years old. I had always shared with my sister and now I had my very own space with my own bed and shelf for my books and toys, and wardrobe for my clothes and desk to write my stories on. There was even a little sink in the corner where I could brush my teeth and wash my face! I put a sign on the door that said ‘Kristyn’s room’.

But with this special new space came responsibility. I had to take care of it. Not just because it made it a better place to be but also because it actually belonged to my parents. They gave me a small part of their house to take care of and I had their rules to follow. I might sometimes let the room get all messed up or (I’m sorry to say!) slam the door when I was grumpy and hide away in my room but all along it was always theirs.

God created this earth home for us. He made us and placed us where we live with all our different personalities and talents and experiences. He likes to see us grow and learn and discover the things we enjoy in these spaces. But all we are and have belongs to Him. Not us.

This song reminds us that because sin messed up His perfect earthly home we needed a Savior to fix all that was broken. Jesus paid a huge price to do that with His precious blood and His Holy Spirit lives within all who trust in Him. And so even more we delight in doing what is right with our bodies and minds and hearts and actions and learn to turn away from what is not. For I belong to the Lord. I am not my own.

Questions to ask:

1. What does the Bible teach us about our bodies?

2. What does holiness mean?

3. How can I use my body in a way that honors the Lord?

Prayer

Father in heaven,

Thank You for making me. Thank You that You know all my days before they come to be. Before a word is on my tongue to explain You understand everything about me and You also are eager to forgive my every sin.

Lord thank You for Your Word which teaches us how to live in a way that is right and pure and pleasing in Your sight. Help us to care about You say and think the most as we consider who we are and what we do. Lead us in Your way of truth and love all the days of our lives. Please help us bring hope to others as we bring Your light.

In Jesus’ holy name,

Amen
