August - Our God Will Go Before Us

Lyrics

Our God will go before us

And guide us by His presence

What confidence this promise is

We will never walk alone

Through unknown paths, through shadows

Our hearts fear not tomorrow

For every step His faithfulness

Is the truth that lights our way

Our God will go before us

The Lord of Hosts is with us

O praise the One who leads us on

For His grace will bring us home

Though evil forms against us

All heaven will defend us

The gates of hell shall not prevail

For the battle is the Lord’s

Our God will go before us

The Lord of Hosts is with us

O praise the One who leads us on

For His grace will bring us home

Now send us with Your presence

And lead us on to heaven

Where songs of sorrow strain no more

And our every breath is praise

O let our every breath be praise

Our God will go before us

The Lord of Hosts is with us

O praise the One who leads us on

For His grace will bring us home

Our God will go before us

The Lord of Hosts is with us

O praise the One who leads us on

For His grace will bring us home

For His grace will bring us home

Something to Think About

As a family, we are getting ready for a new school year. We are grateful for new shoes (they will be clean for about five minutes!) and backpacks and school supplies. There are some nerves about new teachers and making new friends and learning new things. There is also a little sadness that the summer holidays are ending!

Perhaps you are a little nervous about changes coming too. This month’s family hymn is helpful as we think about heading into the next stages and challenges and even just another new day.

The Lord told Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt towards a new homeland. But He promised to go before them, to lead and be with them every step. We read,

‘And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.’ (Exodus 13:21, ESV)

It is unlikely that we will see a big cloud leading us into school! But the very real promise of the Lord’s presence guiding and going before us is with His children. After Jesus had risen from the dead He told His followers to go and tell others of Him. He didn’t send them out alone. He tells them, “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28). We read in Acts how His promised Holy Spirit comes to His people to lead and guide them.

This is why we take courage. This is why we have confidence. This is why we can go and follow Him fully into every new adventure! It is because our God will go before us. His every promise and purpose will be done and His path will lead us home.

Prayer

Father in Heaven,

We thank you for the work of the Lord Jesus on the cross to take away our sin and to fill us up with new life. Thank you for Your Holy Spirit and Your constant presence with us. As we go we pray the prayer of St Patrick that we would always live knowing You are with us and so might honor You in every way and make You known every day.

‘Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
of the Creator of creation.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
