From Kristyn Getty:
The first day Keith and I met we wrote a children’s song together! When we first married and lived in Switzerland we worked on our first album of kids songs. When we had kids, they inspired us to write and to get them singing, too. When the Sing! book and Sing! Conference began, we were challenged to make recordings of hymns old and new for children. Now as we work towards the first Sing! hymnal, writing for the children’s section has been a happy challenge for the writing team!
Here are three hymns for children with more to come. We welcome your thoughts as we continue in this work!
Sandra McCracken and Skye Peterson worked on this new setting of Psalm 150 with me. We wanted to capture the joy of it, the lists of musical instruments and leave room for a big everyone and everything breath in the chorus! Our voices are given to us to praise the Lord and we hope this encourages children and families to enjoy that special calling.
Bryan Fowler, Jordan Kauflin, and Ben Shive brought the idea of this hymn of illumination for kids to us. We worked on a chorus that helped mark out the process of what it means to meditate on God’s word - to hear, to believe, to trust, to obey, to walk in it every day. It carries a fatherly tone. Jordan imagined singing this to his kids, instructing them to know and follow the Word of the Lord. The last verse changes to “Jesus is the Word of the Lord” for He is the message of the Scriptures.
Anxiety in children is a leading challenge of our time. Singing the truth into our hearts helps us whatever age we are. The stories of Jesus who rules over the waves, His invitation for little children to come, and His very real promises to all of us are to be remembered over and over again. We hope this song helps direct the waves of our worry to the safe shores of His steadfast love.
The Getty Girls, Eliza, Charlotte, Grace, and Tahlia are GMA Dove award winning sisters who love to sing.
Born in Nashville to Northern Irish parents, Keith and Kristyn Getty, they started a Family Hymn Sing to encourage families around the world. This led to a BBC Television Documentary and appearances on Fox News and TBN. They returned to Northern Ireland for a year during Covid and followed up with the Dove-award winning children’s album “Hymns from Home”, and made guest artist appearances on Getty #1 Billboard album “Evensong” (even knocking their beloved “Frozen” off the #1 spot on children’s Billboard after 41 weeks, for one week!) and the Grammy nominated album “Confessio”.
Since returning to America they have begun to perform on tours with their family, both singing and playing at venues including Carnegie Hall, Ryman Auditorium, and a first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry.
During 2023 they recorded a second Dove Nominated single “I am not my own” and performed on the Getty “Sing” World Tour in America, Europe, Asia and Australia including the closing night at Sydney Opera House.
For over a decade, Keith and Kristyn Getty have occupied a unique space in the world of music as pre-eminent modern hymn writers with hymns such as “In Christ Alone” among the 32 songs in the CCLI top 500 between the USA and UK. Born in Northern Ireland, the award-winning artists became the first musicians of the modern era to be given the OBE from Queen Elizabeth II for service to music and hymn writing.
They have become ambassadors for the genre, from their “Sing” book and Conference which welcomes over 15,000 people in Nashville every year, to performing for Presidents and Prime Ministers, a hymn tour and Christmas tour which plays annually at Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center (as well as two TV specials on PBS and TBN), as well as founding a publishing company, record label, and online learning site for a new generation of writers and church musicians. Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville with their four daughters.
Joni Eareckson Tada, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Joni and Friends International Disability Center, is an international advocate for people with disabilities. Jordan Kauflin serves as worship pastor at Christ Covenant Church in Atlanta, GA. He is a songwriter whose hymns include "I Will Wait for You (Psalm 130)", "Christ our Hope in Life and Death" and "All I Have Is Christ." He is passionate about raising up the next generation of worship leaders and songwriters.
Sandra McCracken is a songwriter, modern-day hymn writer, and record producer whose songs include “We Will Feast In The House Of Zion” and “Thy Mercy My God.” She is a founding member of Indelible Grace Music and Rain For Roots (children’s music) and has been a guest writer for Art House America, She Reads Truth, The Gospel Coalition, Christianity Today, RELEVANT Magazine and more. She is the author of Send Out Your Light: The Illuminating Power of Scripture and Song.
Skye Peterson is a singer-songwriter based in Nashville, TN. Although she has been writing and recording since high school, she began her career as a musician after studying theology and being inspired by biblical history and hermeneutics. Now writing hymns for Getty Music, Skye is also performing her own concerts and hoping to tell the world that they are not alone and that there’s a King who’s worth singing about.
